6th Grade Required Electives: Spanish, Keyboarding, Health/PE, Math/Reading Study Skills (if necessary).

7th Grade Required Electives: Technology (year), Health/PE, Math/Reading Study Skills (if necessary).

8th Grade Required Electives: Health/PE, Technology (if necessary), Math/Reading Study Skills (if necessary).

 

Classes open to all middle schoolers:

Band: Beginning Band is for any middle school student who would like to get involved with our growing music program. This class will focus on everything related to reading and playing music! The group takes part in band festivals and events outside of school and will perform 3-4 concerts a year. Students will also have the opportunity to audition for the North Carolina District and State Honor Band.
Prerequisites/Special Conditions: Counts as 2 Encore credits, Students are expected to practice 100 minutes per week at home and must furnish their own methods book and instrument.

Choir: This class is for students who have a desire to sing in choral formation and who want to excel as vocalists. Songs are fun and will become more challenging as the year progresses. Enrollment will require participation in all performances.
Prerequisites/Special Conditions: Counts as 2 Encore credits

Strings Ensemble: This class is for students who have been previously involved in orchestra, and also for any students who would like to get involved with the world of stringed instruments. Students will have the opportunity to audition for the Junior All-State Honor Orchestra. Enrollment in this class means that you will participate in all scheduled performances.
Prerequisites/Special Conditions: Counts as 2 Encore credits, Students are expected to practice 100 minutes per week at home and must furnish their own methods book and instrument.

Health/P.E.: Health/P.E. will consist of getting plenty of exercise and learning about healthy habits. Students will be provided the knowledge and experiences essential for monitoring and managing their own health related physical activity including the ability to perform effectively in a variety of lifelong activities. All middle school students are required to take Health/P.E. every year.
Prerequisites/Special Conditions: None

Math/Reading Study Skills: There will be one study skills course offered in both Math and Reading for each grade level. Students will use various texts to improve subject area skills and learn new strategies. This is a good class for those students who would like to improve their study skills, organizational habits, and maybe even get some help with class work!
Prerequisites/Special Conditions: Some students will be required to take this class based on test scores, classroom performance, and teacher recommendation.
